Plantronics is one of the most recognized brands in the world of headsets. What you may not know is that some time ago it acquired Polycom, a company known globally for its audio equipment. The Plantronics merger was later renamed Poly. That said, they continue to produce the excellent Plantronics Voyager 5200.

The 5200 is the latest model in the series. They are not as comfortable as other Plantronics Voyagers of the past, but they are the best in performance and remain the quality standard within the industry. The Plantronics Voyager 5200 offers remarkable call quality, secure and stable connectivity. In this article we tell you about all its features.

Design

The Voyager 5200s look like a handsfree at first glance: they are large and have an integrated boom microphone. No one will have any doubts that you are answering calls, something useful in some occasions. For example, your family won't think you're going crazy talking to yourself.

These Plantronics Bluetooth headsets have a standard design, with a hook that goes around your ear and keeps the handsfree secure. They are a bit larger than other models, but they look sleek, professional and portable. You can store them in any pocket with ease.

The quality of construction is good. The Plantronics Voyager 5200 is made primarily of silicone and plastic. They can withstand accidental drops without receiving any damage. The hook is flexible, which makes it more durable.

The earhook is a little smaller than other Plantronics Voyager headsets and this makes it a little more difficult to adjust if you wear glasses. On the other hand, they remain stable, even when making sudden movements with the head. The microphone also stays in place and does not move.

They are comfortable and come with three different sized silicone tips. They do not go deep into the ear canal, so you can wear them for a couple of hours without them causing pressure. You can also move the microphone to move the handsfree from one ear to the other to avoid discomfort during prolonged sessions.

Controls and functions

The controls of the Plantronics Voyager 5200 are decent. It features buttons for volume down/up, power control and two buttons for call/music control on the microphone. These two microphones are designed more for calls than for playback.

You can only pause or start a playback, but you are allowed to answer or reject calls and call the last number. You can also use one of the microphone buttons to activate your phone's personal assistant. Latency on Android devices is one of the lowest we have tested. In addition, it integrates voice commands that allow you to dictate text messages, for example.

In terms of features, the Plantronics Voyager 5200 uses Bluetooth and NFC technologies. You can synchronize it with any compatible device immediately. On the other hand, you can synchronize it with multiple devices simultaneously, something very useful to switch between your phone and PC whenever you want.

With the Plantronics Hub application you can monitor battery status and customize call options. For example, you can set the sensors to automatically answer or reject a call when you are wearing the Voyager 5200. They are also compatible with the Tile application that allows you to find them in case of loss.

Plantronics Voyager 5200 Performance

The sound profile of the Plantronics Voyager 5200 is very well balanced for speech and dialogue. Bass is not very deep, but vocals come through crisp and without any negative effects. However, some may sound a bit off. Frequency response consistency is also very good.

As long as you get a good fit with the tips that come in the package, you will experience good bass and treble response. The lower frequencies, responsible for the effects that make you tremble in music, do not have a large presence. Likewise, the low-mids leave something to be desired.

Fortunately, the high bass, which gives warmth to the instruments and low voices, is well balanced. In general, the bass is not strong enough to reproduce music. This is because the Plantronics Voyager 5200 is tuned for calls. That said, most people will not notice the lack of bass.

The mid-tone fidelity is amazing. The entire range sounds well balanced, especially the mid-treble, where most of the vocal frequencies are present. This means that calls are perceived as articulate, detailed and present.

Connectivity and microphone

Thanks in part to their size, the Plantronics Voyager 5200s work with one of the longest wireless ranges we've tested. You can use them with Bluetooth connectivity over a range of up to 30 meters, as long as the device is in sight. Likewise, the interferences are much more acceptable than in most handsfree devices you can find in the market.

Like most hands-free monos, these Plantronics Bluetooth headsets do not integrate the best microphone. The voices sound natural and are easy to understand. However, they can also sound a bit dull.

On the other hand, the noise cancellation works quite well. Significantly reduces background noise, such as from cars or buses. Winds are more difficult to turn off, but overall the Voyager 5200s are one of the best handsfree to use in noisy environments.

Autonomy

According to the company, the Plantronics Bluetooth Voyager 5200 has a battery life of up to seven hours. However, after testing them we noticed that they yielded about five and a half hours. It is a good capacity, although not one of the best. That said, you can purchase an additional charging case/base that gives you two additional full charges.

The 5200 shares many features and the same design as the Plantronics Legend. One of the main differences is that the Voyager 5200s charge via micro-USB, while the Legend uses the company's unique system, a plus point for the Voyager 5200s.

What do we like about the Plantronics Voyager 5200?

Quite simply, they are one of the best handsfree devices on the market. They are comfortable, durable, come with multiple ear cushions and the sound quality is designed for making calls. These are excellent noise-cancelling, hands-free mono headphones that are stylish and functional.

What's not to like?

It is a little difficult to get a perfect fit if you wear glasses as the hook is smaller than in other models. They are not as comfortable as other models in the series and the microphone does not stand out either.
